Words can't adequately describe how stunned I am by this news article. I thought it was bad when people started blaming fast food restaurants for their excess weight. But this just goes so far beyond that. Allow me to introduce to you one among the ranks of the truly pathetic. A man who is the embodiment of Sloth. Not only is he lazy in the physical sense of the word, but he’s too lazy to take responsibility for his laziness. Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you: The Reporter - Man says he’s addicted to cable; wants to sue Charter

I’m sure you think it can’t get any worse than that. Well, you’d be wrong. “Cable TV made a West Bend man addicted to TV, caused his wife to be overweight and his kids to be lazy, he says. And he’s threatening to sue the cable company. Dumouchel blames Charter for his TV addiction, his wife’s 50-pound weight gain and his children’s being “lazy channel surfers,” according to a Fond du Lac police report.” What is he suing for? “Timothy Dumouchel of West Bend wants $5,000 or three computers, and a lifetime supply of free Internet service from Charter Communications to settle what he says will be a small claims suit.”

So to recap, lazy man sues cable company for making him and his family lazy and overweight. He expects compensation in the form of computers and internet access so the cable company can cause him to be lazy and overweight in front of a computer instead of a tv.

Please, please god give me powers to smite those whose only use to humanity is as fertilizer.

L.A. Daily News

“Los Angeles County officials have gone PC (politically correct) on PCs (personal computers) -- banning as potentially “offensive or defamatory” the words master and slave from computer hard drives and video equipment where they are used to describe primary and secondary circuits.”

This politically correct bull shit is really getting on my nerves. To what extent are people going to go to make sure no one’s “insulted” by a term. What if the removal of a term insults someone else? I bet people in the BDSM lifestyle would be offended at the removal of Master/Slave from computer devices. After all, the removal of those words implies that it's bad, which implies that what they do is bad. Hell, I feel offended for them already.

Maybe we should just all hold hands and sing. This is what happens when the hippies from the 60s get into positions of power. They’re creating a generation of spineless, whimpy crybabies. “Awwww.... does that word hurt the wittle guys fweelings? We’ll just change it to something else. There you go. Are you all better now?” I mean, come on. The Master/Slave terminology is an industry standard. Everyone in the industry understands that it’s in reference to IDE devices, not slavery.

“Dennis A. Tafoya, director of the affirmative action office, said an African-American employee who filed the complaint felt it was employment discrimination because the employee was working on video equipment with the label written on it.”

“‘The issue was the employee had to operate this equipment and look at the term ‘slave and master,’ and given their background as an African-American person, I imagine they had different feelings about it,’ Tafoya said.”

You know, I’m sorry that slavery was legal in America at one point – 138 years ago to be exact. But to take offense at that word is just asinine. It's quite possible that the person who took offense doesn’t even have ancestors that were slaves in America. There has been and still is immigration from Africa, thus reducing the percentage of “slave families.” And, African-Americans weren’t the only people who were slaves at one point in our Earth’s history, nor were they the last. Slavery still exists today in parts of the world. It’s very possible, most likely probable, that an ancestor of mine was a slave. But, I’m not offended by the word. And I think that getting offended by a word used in reference to a hardware device is ludicrous. Maybe we should just strike both of those words from the English language.

How ridiculous is this going to get? If I was in mining, would the entire industry change their terminology because I found “cracker” to be offensive? What about Spic n’ Span cleaners? How many Latinos might be offended by that?

As a friend said to me who agreed with my view on this, “Politically correct is a mutant that has outlived its usefulness and as such, should be put down like the rabid dog that it is.”

JS Online: Feeding of brain-damaged woman resumes

Today, six days after she was removed from life support, a bill was passed allowing Gov. Jeb Bush to have the woman reconnected to life support. This bill was rushed through specifically so this could be done. Here is an example of the government sticking their noses where it doesn’t belong and proves the point I made in my synthesis paper. Laws should not be passed based on personal feeling. Even some of those who voted to pass the bill realized they were doing something wrong. Senate President Jim King said, “I hope, I really do hope we’ve done the right thing. I keep on thinking, ‘What if Terri didn’t really want this done at all?’ May God have mercy on all of us.”

The whole right to die issue really bothers me. It bothers me that it’s an issue. People should have to right to do anything to their own bodies so long as they are not harming another. In this case, Schiavo told her husband that she did not want to be kept alive should she be in the state she is currently in. She’s been in a coma for 13 years. Her husband realizes that she’s not coming back and that it’s time to honor her wishes. I think her parents just don’t want to face reality. Yes, I’m sure it’s a difficult decision, but let’s use some logic.

This reminds me of another pet peeve of mine. Youth in Asia, as I tend to think of it. Try spelling that the correct way using Hooked On Phonics. Euthanasia and the whole Dr. Kevorkian issue. Again with the people-should-be-able-to-do-whatever-they-want-to-themselves-without-interference-from-anyone point. If I have some terminal disease and am suffering greatly because of it, I want someone to be able to help me to die without worrying about them being accused of murder. I sincerely hope that every person who thinks it is wrong to put yourself or have yourself put out of your misery – and especially those who vote against the right to do this – die of some horribly painful disease so they can see what it’s like. So they can feel what they made others have to go through. I see it as torture to force a person to remain alive through agonizing pain when they are just going to die from the illness anyway. What kind of sick and demented person would wish that on someone? So I truly hope those who oppose this develop stomach cancer or bone cancer or AIDS. They need to feel what they’ve forced other’s to go through.

ABCNEWS.com : Did Video Game Drive Teens to Shootings?

Give me a break. I'm so sick of hearing people blame companies and rock groups for the violence that kids do. "It was Marilyn Manson's fault and "The Matrix" maker’s fault for Columbine," "It was Metallica's fault for a boy's suicide"... I knew it was only a matter of time before someone blamed the makers of Grand Theft Auto. I've played the game. It's an excellent game but no one but an adult has any business playing it.

I see it's rated M, which means "Content may be suitable for persons ages 13 and older. May contain violent content, mild or strong language, and/or suggestive themes". I have to disagree with that. I think it's too violent for anyone under 18.

Be that as it may, I still think it is ultimately the parents' responsibility for what their children have contact with and the values instilled in their children. Any one teaching their children common sense and right and wrong, and who disciplines their children, would never have a child who did this - no matter how many graphic video games he or she played.

Why is it that the parents are never at fault when their child does something like this? No one ever thinks, "Wow, the parents sure dropped the ball on raising this kid." No. They think, "This company made this product that caused these kids to kill people." Um, why did these kids never get that killing is bad? Who do you think was supposed to teach them that? Do you think that if someone had taught them the value of life that maybe this wouldn't have happened? Do you think that if someone had made these kids accountable for other misdeeds they had done that maybe they would have understood that shooting at cars is wrong?

I love this line: "The industry needs to cough up money so victims and their families can be compensated for their pain." Compensated for their pain!?! Will this money make them feel better? Is there a price on their loved one's life? When they look at their brand new house will they think, "Bobby's life paid for this?" I fail to understand how suing a game maker will stop children from committing violent crimes. Sue the parents! They're the ones didn't do their job. Make parents so paranoid about being sued that they raise their children with proper values. Maybe then there will be less people to write about in my blog.

Oops! I don't know how I did it, but I put in the wrong description for the "M" rating for video games. Thanks to Zach for letting me know. The correct description is: "MATURE
Have content that may be suitable for persons ages 17 and older. Titles in this category may contain mature sexual themes, more intense violence and/or strong language."

Well, I did it again. I foolishly, naively, and really without any thought at all, gave an entire group of people the benefit of the doubt. Of course it came back and kicked me in the ass. I feel so stupid.

I was so proud of my users. The Sobig.F email worm came out and not a one of them opened it. They've finally listened to all the email warnings I put out. "Silly little admin. You should know that users are too stupid to keep from opening a virus!"

I really was proud of them. Sigh... As it turns out, the antivirus server stopped sending me the emails it was supposed to. The computer got a reboot on Wednesday after I installed some updates. Thursday morning I was greeted with 40 "virus found" emails. I felt so let down and disappointed. And stupid. How could I have been so dumb as to believe none of my users would open a virus infected email? I guess because I don't understand how after all the email warnings I sent out that they still don't get it. I mean, how hard is it to remember not to open an attachment with a .pif extension? I've only told them not to do it at least once a month for the past year. Clearly, they aren't reading my emails. Or they just don't care. It's insulting. This is important stuff. Sobig.F came out so fast that there was a real chance that someone could have opened it before the antivirus definitions were updated across the campus. Users need to take responsibility for computer security because computers admins can't possibly prevent every scenario for infection.

I noticed that within the list of opened viruses there was a familiar name. Well, they're all familiar; I know practically everyone who works there. This was familiar because of the number of times I've seen his name in one of the "virus found" emails. I swear this guy opens every virus laden email he gets. Why do you suppose that is? Is he too stupid to do otherwise? I think the real reason is he's too arrogant. I've met the guy and I've heard stories from other people in my department. This guy thinks he's god's gift to the world. I'm sure he opens these attachments because he feels he's too important to bother with worrying about viruses. That's the computer department's job. And, yes, it is our job. But when you don't have any money to spend on cool gadgets like an email gateway virus scanner for instance, you have to rely on the users having some brains.

If anyone cares to donate $20,000 to my organization's computer department to purchase an email gateway appliance, please contact me.

Few things are more annoying than someone who pays no attention to important information you send them. You know they’ve paid no attention when they email you asking a question that you clearly answered in an email you sent out just a day before, or a week before, or even an hour before. It’s even more annoying when you send them those emails a second time and they have to gall to ask you the same question again. Apparently, these people need someone to personally come to their desk with a giant picture drawn out for them. Surprisingly, these people have PhDs. You’d think that would make them smart. I guess all the “smart” in their brains flow to the parts that are used in their fields of study leaving the other areas of their brains empty. Where does the Archdiocese's get off even offering to settle lawsuits for money? A whopping $55 million. That money belongs to every Catholic church member who ever gave money to the church. That money does not belong to the men who actually did the crimes. Sounds to me like the Catholic church members are being raped all over again and the guilty parties are getting off (pun intended). How exactly is giving other people's money away punishing the criminals? All it will accomplish is punishing the church members. These priests and bishops should be the ones paying out money.

And while I'm talking about the Catholic church, who the hell do they think they are spouting off how evil homosexuality is when they covered for and had so many pedophile homosexuals in their ranks. Not to mention all their other evil deeds.

CNN.com - Suicide bus bombing kills at least 20 in Jerusalem - Aug. 19, 2003

I don't know why we or anyone else tries. These people have been killing each other for 2000 years. Nothing will stop them so why bother? Personally, I think we should just let them kill each other. They're too stupid and incompetent to do anything else. They've had 2000 years to try to stop and have been unwilling to. Why should now be any different? Why even bother with people so bent on murdering each other? And the reason they do this? My most favorite topic in the whole world: Religion.

One of the many reasons I hate organized religion. Here we have people killing for their god. This is my holy land and you're on it so I'm going to kill you. No, it's MY holy land so I'm going to kill you. Back and forth and back and forth and back and forth. Grow the hell up already. If your god's so damn great then why hasn't he/she/it seen fit to allow your minds to evolve to comprehend logic, caring, tolerance, and love? Why can't you share? Why do you have to act like a bunch of spoiled brat kids with no conscience? I'll tell you what, I want no part of your god. Your god is evil to me. If your god was really decent, you'd think he/she/it would have inspired you all to be nice to one another. But, 2000 years have passed and you're still kicking each other's asses. I'm going to guess either your god doesn't exist or your god is Aries. Losers.

CNN.com - Attention disorder linked with drug abuse - Aug. 18, 2003

ADD or ADHD or whatever the hell they're calling it now... I think this is a completely made up disorder. Or maybe it really does exist but some very very small percentage of the population actually has it. What I think the real problem is, is the way kids are raised today. Not enough parental contact and definitely not enough discipline. There's too much of this "time out" crap. There's too much political correctness, too much concern over feelings, and too much zero tolerance. There's a happy medium for this stuff and society has gone way passed it. Parents don't want to deal with their kids, teachers don't want to deal with kids... This makes for very unruly, bratty, smart-assed kids. Just because your kid was a spaz when he or she was little, doesn't mean the kid has ADD. Just because your kid is a little punk in middle and high school, doesn't mean he or she has ADD. Maybe you just don't want to take the time that's required to be a good parent. Maybe it's become the new trend in society to pass the buck and take zero responsibility for one's actions all while being completely incompetent.

I was a little spaz when I was a kid. I was the biggest brat there ever was. I practically bounced off the walls and "no" was my favorite word. I was even "labeled" hyperactive by my pediatrician. Thank god ritalin wasn't around then. If I had been born 20 years later, you bet your ass I'd be drugged out of my mind right now. Yet, without drugs, I was able to go to school, get good grades, not take drugs, graduate school, and become a productive member of society. How? Good parents who took the time to teach me right and wrong. I was grounded when I did something wrong - I did not receive a "time out" or have my transgression idly dismissed. Kids get away with so much crap today it's no wonder they're little hellions that everyone wants to drug.

So parent's and doctor's solution to the typical kid behavior is to drug the hell out of them. Give'm something just like Cocaine. No. Stronger. You knew that right? That ritalin has the same pharmacological profile as cocaine. Why would you give your kid cocaine? What kind of sicko are you? The kind that's too lazy to be a real parent and is contributing to the crap that America is becoming. But that's a rant for another day.

My whole point is that here's an article CNN has put out that says, "It could be because children with the disorder -- called ADHD -- have trouble paying attention, have problems at school and difficulty with relationships with friends and family. This, in turn, could make them susceptible to abusing drugs and alcohol, the researchers said." Or maybe it's the Cocaine they're being given. If marijuana (or is it cigarettes?) is the stepping stone drug to other drugs, what happens when you just start them out on Cocaine? As kids? Hmmm.... Maybe they become drug users? Or if they aren't on the Cocaine yet, maybe the parents just suck? If they can't or won't control their children, of course they're going to have problems in school and with relationships. Duh! It's not rocket science for christ sake.

Death From Ritalin The Truth Behind ADHD
Ritalin Information: Side Effects, Cautions, Alternatives, ADD, ADHD
Ritalin 'Cocaine Properties' May Lead To Later Drug Abuse
ADHD - Is Ritalin Kiddie Cocaine?
Ritalin is More Potent Than Cocaine
WorldNetDaily: Cocaine for kids?
Drugging Our Kids - The New American - August 25, 2003

Ah, the black out. I'd like to thank CNN for the incredibly responsible way they handed this. (eye roll) I'm on their Breaking News email list so I got an email the day it happened saying the power was out in NYC, Detroit, Cleveland, some other city whose name I forgot, and other cities. That's it. No other info. At first I think, "how on earth is a black out breaking news?" Then I see how many cities and how far apart they are. Clearly, something's wrong here. Now, I couldn't help but wonder if terrorism was a factor. The rational part of my brain said no, the jump-to-conclusions part said it was possible. So I go to CNN's web site to get more info. Nothing. Not a word. I go talk with a co-worker. He has the radio on and they're reporting that smoke is seen coming from somewhere in NYC. Jump-to-conclusions brain is beginning to really kick in. I start IMing my friends to see if they have any info. Nope. All the while rational brain is trying to convince jump-to-conclusions brain that it's just a normal power outage. That they probably all get their power from the same place. The media always goes overboard with this stuff. They're probably just jumping to conclusions. Well, jumping-to-conclusions brain was having none of it.

It's a problem I have that is most likely the cause for my anger with people and hence this blog. I put too much faith in people. I assume they will act in a responsible and caring manner because that's how I think people should act. The unfortunate truth is that many of them don't. But, that doesn't stop my stupid brain from always thinking that they will act in the way I expect. And so, I am always let down and on comes the anger and disbelief. For some reason my brain refuses to learn that people suck because I am constantly amazed every time someone does something suckish. And so, I yet again gave the media the benefit of the doubt. Of course they wouldn't needlessly scare people. Not after 9/11. They know people are afraid of this happening again. Sigh...

Finally, just ten minutes after they sent their email, CNN posts a story saying a power plant overloaded. Now tell me, why couldn't they have just said that in their email? It takes longer than ten minutes to write a story and publish it to a web page so they had to know before they sent the email. I'll tell you why. Because they're evil. Just ask Don Henley, he knows.

The other thing that bothers me, at least as far as CNN is concerned (admittedly, I did not check other news sources) is that you'd hardly know anyone besides NYC was without power. All they could report on was NYC this and NYC that. One would think that we all live and die for the knowledge of how New Yorkers carry on day to day. Here are some of the titles of the links that have been on CNNs site over the last two days: "Flashlights, pay phones rule in unplugged NYC," "Federal government to let New York draw electricity from New England," "New Yorkers face new emergency," "When the lights went out in New York," "Jeff Greenfield: Kinder, gentler New Yorkers," and "The night the lights went out on B'way," because they know you were biting your nails over what Broadway's going to do with no power.

And now for a truly touching story about success in the face of overwhelming odds. I'm so glad someone took the time to research this topic because I was really wondering if and how they were able to carry on with their truly noble mission. Screw the people trapped in elevators, the electricians working to figure out what happened and fix it, the police hoping everyone stays calm, how the hospitals were dealing with the outage... The real story boys and girls, the one everyone was one the edge of their seats waiting for is here:
CNN.com - Media struggles, but gets the word out - Aug. 15, 2003

I think I'll be checking out Fox News from now on. I was just at their site and they have a ton of news headlines that are nowhere to be found on CNN. It's like CNN is reporting from another world. Yeah. Planet New York.

Some fun things from the power outage:
Iraqis' top 10 tips for enduring blackout in the heat
Third World Laughs at Blackout Woes
Even when people grow up they never really grow up, do they? CNN.com - Canada and U.S. blame each other - Aug. 15, 2003

Wow. This man has no business being a judge. He should be removed immediately. He says: "I have no intention of removing the monument of the Ten Commandments, the moral foundation of our law," he said. "To do so would, in effect, be a disestablishment of the justice system of this state. "The question is not whether I will remove the monument," Moore added. "It is not a question of whether I will disobey or obey a court order. The real question is whether or not I will deny the God that created us." "Separation of church and state never was meant to separate God from our government. It was never meant to separate God from our law," he said. Umm, yes it was. That's exactly what it means. The fact that a judge doesn't get that is more than enough reason to disbar him (if that's the correct terminology for a judge).

This is so infuriating. How can he possibly be unbiased in his court rulings? He thinks it's perfectly ok to bring god into the courtroom - his god.

It really pisses me off that some people seem to think it's perfectly ok to bring their religious views into a public place and impose them on others. It's spreading fast and many organizations are being hit with it - A major computer retailer, large universities, Maryland's motor vehicle agency, and Swedish Internet users. You know what I say to that? HA! You morons.

On July 17, nearly one month ago, the vulnerability this worm exploits was announced. It made news headlines everywhere. The govenment even put out a warning to people to install a patch from Microsoft's Windows Update site. It was on the radio, the nightly news, the newspaper, magazines, AOL's main login screen, CNN's "front page". Everywhere you turned there was a message warning you to patch your system. There was no way to miss it. Everywhere it was stated that this is a very serious flaw that has a great possibility of being exploited by a virus, worm, or trojan. It wasn't a matter of "if" but "when". You think people would have gotten off their lazy butts and downloaded the update. But they didn't. CNN.com - Warnings did little to stop internet worm - Aug. 13, 2003

All I have to say to those people is, "you deserve it." You've been told, and you've been told, and you've been told. And still you did nothing. I don't want to hear whining about how many computers are in your organization and how you didn't have time to do it. But you sure are making time now, aren't you? Blaster infected your computers real good and made sure of that. Your soul is of the powerful and ethereal family of the elemental spirits. With your impish charm and striking sense of humor and optimisim, you are constantly surrounded by friends and admirers, many of whom watch you from afar, beguiled by your magnetic personality and wit, but too shy to approach you. People of your origin often find themselves in the entertainment industry, as they love to make people laugh and feel better about life. You are most likely fascinated by the origin of fairies, elves and other magical beings, and feel a sense of inexplicable clarity when you watch such movies as Harry Potter and Lord Of The Rings. You live for your dreams and most likely your closest friends are other Elementals and Wise Ones, the reincarnated witches and wizards you worked alongside in a past life. You love animals and nature and are greatly angered at man's abuse of it. You hide your anguish behind a beautiful smile and dazzling eyes. Don't let the world's drudgery wiegh your wings down, as the human race is counting on you for its sense of morale and hope, which is forever being tested. Stay true to yourself, and one day it will all come together.

Which Earth Angel Are You?
brought to you by Quizilla

This one really isn’t about why people suck. Just about something that irritates the heck out of me. This seems to be a problem that came about completely because of the Internet. It’s either the refusal or inability of people communicating electronically to use proper grammar and spelling. It’s like Hooked On Phonics has penetrated the English writing world. Or at least those 21 and under. Maybe this is a problem in other languages. Since I can’t read any other language, I really don’t know. But I do know it’s a major problem in English. I’m not saying my grammar is perfect. I know it’s not. But there’s a distinct difference between people making normal grammatical errors and what I’m about to describe.

Go to a chat room, a newsgroup, a Yahoo Game room, or any other place that attracts the younger generation and just read. See how long you can tolerate it. If you’re not of that age group of course. Now, I’m just making assumptions that the people who write like that are under 21. I guess it’s more of a hope. I hope the only people who write like are the ones who haven’t grown up yet. But I really don’t know.

Anyway, back to my rant. It is so irritating when people don’t spell their words out. “Hi! How R U? Im fine ty. Y r u here? 4 eva. Shortening words – ‘would’ to “wood.’ Shortening thank you to ty, no problem to np, and any number of other words. I discovered recently in the Sheepshead Yahoo Game room that, sadly, they do it in there too. There was a full group in the room waiting for everyone to press start. Some of the players started typing the letter ‘n’. As it turns out that meant ‘in’. Tell me, how difficult is it to type an extra letter to make a full word?

And have you ever tried talking to people? Practically everyone starts a conversation with asl (age, sex, location). It’s even more annoying when your profile clearly answers each of those questions already. In my opinion (that’s IMO for those who only know the shorthand way), anyone starting out a conversation with asl is only looking for one type of conversation. And try having a female sounding username. There isn’t a man who starts a conversation with you that doesn’t have an ulterior motive – and they get to it quite quickly. It’s actually been years since I’ve actively tried talking to people with some type of instant messaging program. I’m going to try it again soon to see if things have changed. I’m guessing not. I’ll keep you updated.

Right now, I’m going to watch an episode of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.”

This weekend I went to a festival with my grandma and my boyfriend. I bought a glass of wine and was sipping it as we walked along. We were walking slowly because my grandma has bad knees. All of a sudden, some guy slams into me as he walks passed. Half the wine splashes out of the glass and all over me. Now, I understand that these things happen at festivals. And that part of the incident doesn't make me that mad. However, when you bump into someone, you say, "Excuse me." When you slam into someone so hard that their drink splashes all over the place, saying "excuse me" is even more important and there should be an, “I’m sorry” in there someplace. This is just common courtesy. This guy didn’t say a word. Nothing, zip, zilch, nada. This is just one of the many things that are wrong with people today. How difficult is it to acknowledge an accidental transgression? It’s so easy to do and it puts everyone at ease. Yet, this doofus couldn’t do that. And here I am, three days later, still pissed about it. Yes, part of that is my problem – I can’t just let it go. But all he had to say was two little words.

Manners people! Never forget your manners.

Hi. This is my blog of 1001 Reasons Why People Suck. Of course there aren’t 1001 reasons here, but I'm sure there will be at some point. People piss me off every day and instead of complaining to my friends about them, I'm going to write about them here.

I guess what it really comes down to is that too many people are inconsiderate. The simple act of “doing onto others as you would have them do onto you” seems to be too difficult a concept for most people. If everyone would just keep this simple idea in mind, the world would be a much better place.

I also want to say that I am very thankful that I am fortunate enough to be in a position to create a blog to complain about people. There are hundreds of millions of people who have to worry about where their next meal is coming from; people who live in war torn countries; people who go through every day knowing that there is a very real possibility that a suicide bomber will take their life or that of a loved one; people who are enslaved; people who are being tortured; people who live in utter poverty; people who are starving to death; people who don’t have a home; and people whose situation is countless times worse than what my petty annoyance with the people I encounter happens to be. I am thankful that for this lifetime I was lucky enough to be born to good, middle-class parents in the greatest nation on earth. I am sorry for those who have not been so lucky. They are not included in the group of people who suck – unless they are hurting another in some way in which case they are definitely right back on the list.
